So, after the very long and eager wait, Toyota SA has released local prices for the much anticipated 86 sports coupe that will be launched here from July 9, 2012. With something with this calibre and this much heritage you’d expect quite a hefty price tag right? Think again…
The standard version of the 2+2 seater will be available at launch, with Toyota stating that two high-spec versions will follow later in the month. The standard model’s price starts at a mere R298 500 while the 86 High manual will cost R329 400 and the High with a six-speed automatic, R346 500…literally the price of some very common four-door saloons cruising our streets today.
So you may ask, what am I getting for my money? Well, how does this sound? The all new Subaru 2-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine that uses Toyota’s Direct Injection four-stroke petrol system and develops 147kW at 7000rpm and a peak torque figure of 205Nm from 6400 to 6600rpm. Standard features on the 86 High models include a Smart Start keyless entry system, leather and alcantara upholstery, climate control and 17” alloy wheels. Quite a lot of bang for your buck!
Kerry Roodt, general manager for marketing communications, said: “The 86 is so much more than just another product, it signals a completely new direction for Toyota.
